October 23, (THEWILL) – Newcastle’s Eddie Howe-led revolution gained momentum with a decisive 2-1 victory over Tottenham on Super Sunday thanks to goals from Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron in the first half.
For the opener, Wilson collided with Spurs’ keeper Hugo Lloris, who went to ground after making only slight contact with the Newcastle forward in the 31st minute, allowing him to lob both Lloris and Eric Dier to score. A VAR review determined there had been no foul.
Almiron’s goal five minutes before halftime gave Newcastle a comfortable two-goal advantage and came from an interception of Lloris’ pullout. Almiron dribbled past Ryan Sessegnon and Clement Lenglet before firing under the Spurs goalie to make it 2-0.
Antonio Conte’s team had hope of a comeback after Harry Kane scored, but there was not enough time to prevent a second straight English Premier League loss. As a result, the visitors moved up to fourth place, two points and a place behind Spurs.
On Wednesday, at home in the UEFA Champions League, Spurs will play Sporting CP and next Saturday is Newcastle’s home game against Aston Villa.
