December 10, (THEWILL) – A leg fracture at a post-World Cup vacation has meant that Manuel Neuer will not be able to play again in the 2022/2023 season.
The goalkeeper for Bayern Munich started each of Germany’s three group stage contests, but he was unable to retain a clean sheet when Die Mannschaft unexpectedly lost their opening match.
Neuer was granted some time off after the elimination, and he went on a skiing vacation. Unfortunately, he broke his leg there, and he has since confirmed that his season is over as a result.
“What can I say, the end of the year could have definitely gone better. While I was trying to get my head clear while ski touring, I suffered a lower leg fracture. Yesterday’s surgery went well. Many thanks to the doctors! However, it hurts to know that the current season is over for me.”
The 36-year-old, who serves as the club captain for Bayern, has made 16 appearances this year despite the Bundesliga team having to deal with his absence for a period of time in October while Neuer was out with an injury. At the time, 34-year-old Sven Ulreich took his position, and if Bayern decides not to sign Neuer’s replacement, he may be in line for a lengthy stint with the team.
