Naira Swap: Anti-democratic Elements Regrouping To Undermine Democracy – Ganduje

February 07, (THEWILL) – Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has alleged that anti-democratic forces, who worked against the success of the June 12, 1993, presidential election are reuniting and planning to use the naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to undermine Nigeria’s democracy.

The Governor made the claim while reacting to an interim injunction issued by a Federal High Court in Abuja, which stopped the CBN from extending the February 10 deadline for the currency swap.

THEWILL reports that a Federal Capital Territory High Court, presided over by Justice Eleojo Enenche, on Monday, bared the CBN and President Muhammadu Buhari, from extending the February 10 deadline for the currency swap.

“An order of interim injunction is hereby made restraining the defendants whether by themselves, staff agents, officers, interfacing banks or whosoever not to suspend, stop, extend, vary or interfere with the extant termination date of use of the old N200, N500, and N1000 bank note being 10th day of February 2023, pending the hearing and determination of motion on notice,” the court held.

The ruling followed a motion ex parte filed by five of the 18 registered political parties in the country.

However, the Kano Governor said the plaintiffs in the suit are unknown political parties, working with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to impose an unpopular cash policy on Nigerians.

In a statement issued by his Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba, the Governor accused the CBN and supporters of the naira redesign policy of being rigid in the implementation of the “harsh and insensitive” cash policy, despite the widespread outrage by Nigerians, including the National Assembly and State Governors.

He also alleged that the support of the policy by the PDP and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, showed the complicity between the opposition and the apex bank to allegedly undermine the country’s democracy.
