September 07, (THEWILL) – On Tuesday night at the Audi Field in Washington, D.C., the United States Women’s National Team defeated the Super Falcons 2-1 to maintain its perfect record against the Nigerian ladies.
On September 3, the two teams faced off at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, with the Americans winning 4-0 and even though the Americans won again, Tuesday’s game was a better showing from the much depleted Nigerian team.
Oluwatosin Blessing Demehin of Nigeria scored an own goal in the 24th minute to give the United States the lead. However, that advantage was lost early in the second half when Uchenna Kanu scored to tie the game at 1-1.
It was the first by a Confederation of African Football team against the USWNT since the 2000 Olympics and the first goal the Americans had conceded since April, ending their 880-minute string of clean sheets.
In response, Megan Rapinoe was introduced to replace Sophia Smith in the 65th minute, and gave the U.S. women a boost off the bench. One minute after, Rapinoe connected with Rose Lavelle for the game-winning goal just 73 seconds after entering the field.
