June 21, (THEWILL) – AS Roma Manager, Jose Mourinho, has received a four-match suspension in the UEFA Europa League, as announced by UEFA, Europe’s soccer governing body, on Wednesday.
This disciplinary action stems from Mourinho’s use of abusive language towards referee Anthony Taylor during a match. In addition, Roma has been fined for their behaviour. Mourinho’s criticism of the refereeing following Roma’s loss to Sevilla in the Europa League final led to harassment of Taylor and his family by supporters of the Italian club at Budapest Airport.
The club has been fined a total of €55,000 and barred from selling tickets to their away supporters for their next match due to various incidents of misconduct, including the lighting of fireworks, object throwing, acts of damage, and crowd disturbances during the final. Roma has been instructed to contact the Hungarian Football Federation within 30 days to address the damages caused by their supporters.
Meanwhile, West Ham United has been fined €58,000 following their victory over Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final. West Ham supporters threw objects onto the pitch and invaded the field of play during the match in Prague. During the incident, Fiorentina’s captain, Cristiano Biraghi, was struck on the head by an object, resulting in him requiring medical attention. The club will participate in the Europa League next season, having secured the victory in the final.
Furthermore, Roma faced another fine of €80,500 and a partial stadium closure of 6,000 seats due to object throwing during their semifinal against Bayer Leverkusen. Similarly, the German club was fined €43,000 and partially closed their stadium by 5,000 seats for incidents involving the lighting of fireworks and object throwing. Fiorentina and FC Basel were also penalised and prohibited from selling tickets to their away supporters in their next match for similar offences.
