February 26, (THEWILL) – In Sunday’s late La Liga fixture, Real Madrid moved eight points clear at the top of the standings, thanks to a controversial 1-0 victory over Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabeu. Luka Modric scored the decisive goal with 15 minutes remaining, although the visitors protested furiously that Antonio Rudiger had been in an offside position in the build-up.
It was a largely even contest, with both sides creating chances. Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri should have opened the scoring early on but missed the target from close range. At the other end, Lucas Vazquez saw his effort ruled out by VAR for a foul in the build-up. The returning Sergio Ramos was pivotal in keeping Real at bay during the first half in particular.
After the break, the hosts upped the tempo. Both Federico Valverde and Rodrygo went close, while goalkeeper Orjan Nyland made some important saves. However, the introduction of Modric proved decisive, with the Croatian curling in from the edge of the area.
Referee Isidro DÃaz de Mera Escuderos was forced off injured in the second half, with fourth official Carlos Fernandez Buergo taking charge for his maiden top-flight appearance. He allowed Modric’s controversial goal to stand despite Sevilla’s protests.
Real remain unbeaten in 18 league games at the Bernabeu. They now lead second-placed Girona by eight points and seem well set for another La Liga title. Sevilla sit 15th, six points above the relegation zone.
