July 14, (THEWILL) – Reports monitored by THEWILL in Spain claim that a resolution to the contractual circumstances surrounding Barcelona and club legend Lionel Messi’s continued stay at the club have been reached in principle, as a new five-year contract is set to bring him back to Camp Nou.

As THEWILL reported, Messi had become a free agent at the end of June with the running out of his previous contract with the Catalan side. News of some clubs in Europe seizing the chance to offer him a deal, particularly Ligue 1’s Paris Saint-Germain, trying to steal him to France, made for interesting reading while Barca worked out a new deal.

The information coming out of Spain is that this process is in its final stages but with significant changes. The most debated aspect was that the Argentine had agreed to a “significant wage reduction,”which has been speculated in some reports to be up to 50 percent of his previous wages.

Although not official, details about the contract renewal have it that it will include a termination clause of about £320 million ($444 million).

The rollercoaster ride that has been the contract debacle of Barcelona’s best player was the subject of a confrontational pose by the Argentine to force an exit from La Blaugrana last summer especially after he revealed his intentions to then-president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

Desirous to keep their talismanic player, the club enforced a disputed contract clause, demonstrating a willingness to uphold a €700 million ($827 million) buyout fee, which effectively nullified the player’s attempted move out of Camp Nou.

In comments about what transpired at the period, Messi described how the club shuttered his attempts: “I thought and was sure that I was free to leave; the President always said that at the end of the season I could decide if I stayed or not.

“Now they cling to the fact that I did not say it before June 10, when it turns out that on June 10 we were competing for La Liga in the middle of this awful coronavirus.”

When the dust settled over the transfer issue, Messi returned to business as usual. He provided 38 goals in 47 matches across all competitions to take the highest goal-scorer prize again and he welcomed Joan Laporta back to the role of club President after the businessman and politician was elected for a second time with the goal of revamping the club’s fortunes.

Laporta’s management of the club turned out to be a “major factor” for Messi’s decision to return to Catalonia. The Spanish football administrator is bringing reforms and changes to reposition the club even though he is working on a shoe-string budget. Some of the changes Messi desires to see are already happening with more team restructuring and the strengthening of the team to make it more competitive.

The upgrade of the squad has seen the addition of summer arrivals as Messi’s fellow Argentine forward Sergio Aguero and Spanish defender Eric Garcia from Manchester City in the English Premier League and Memphis Depay, from Ligue 1’s Olympique Lyon to get Barca back to their trophy-winning ways.
