March 02, (THEWILL) – Mercedes boss, Toto Wolff, has acknowledged that the team is “still playing catch-up” with Red Bull ahead of the 2023 Formula One season, but is confident that they are “stronger than 12 months ago.”
THEWILL recalls that Red Bull, the reigning constructors’ champions, put on an impressive showing during pre-season testing in Bahrain and are once again the team to beat.
Lewis Hamilton, who recorded the second-fastest time on the final day of testing, has said that the team has a “mountain to climb” if they are to compete with Red Bull this year. While the issues that plagued the team last year seem to have disappeared, it remains to be seen whether the new W14 car can match the performance of Red Bull and Ferrari.
The 2023 season gets underway in Bahrain this weekend, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, defending his two-time drivers’ championship. Mercedes’ only win last year came in the final race in Sao Paulo, and Wolff is confident that the team can improve on that performance.
The Mercedes Formula 1 Team Principal says that the unit is excited about the challenge ahead and is determined to compete in each of the 23 race weekends that make up the championship circuit for the 2023 calendar.
