May 8, (THEWILL) – Golf superstar, Rory McIlroy, has revealed he will not be rejoining the PGA Tour’s policy board, despite previously indicating his desire to do so. The world number two cited discomfort from some existing board members as the reason behind the decision.
The 34-year-old had stepped down from the influential player advisory board in 2022. However, he stated last month that he was prepared to return by taking over Webb Simpson’s seat after the American offered to resign. Negotiations around the Northern Irishman’s reinstatement have proven complicated.
“It opened up some wounds and scar tissue from things that have happened before,” McIlroy told reporters on Wednesday, adding: “There was a subset of people on the board who were uncomfortable with me coming back on for some reason.”
As a result, Simpson will remain on the board until his term expires. McIlroy expressed no hard feelings, saying: “The best course of action is if there are some people on there who aren’t comfortable with me coming back on, then I think Webb stays on and sees out his term.”
The four-time major winner had hoped to assist in the ongoing merger talks between the PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Tour. McIlroy remains impatient to see a resolution, stating: “We’ve got this window of opportunity to get it done because both sides need to, from a business perspective.”
