October 23, (THEWILL) – Golfing legend, Rory McIlroy, has disclosed that he would ‘love’ to invest in Manchester United, as the club’s takeover saga approaches its conclusion.
As THEWILL reported, INEOS founder, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has agreed to purchase a 25% stake in the club, pending approval from shareholders. Once confirmed, Ratcliffe intends to establish a new three-person leadership committee including himself, current co-chairman, Joel Glazer and cycling expert, Sir Dave Brailsford.
Speaking recently, lifelong United supporter, McIlroy – now an investor in the Alpine Formula One team – said he would have relished the opportunity to join Ratcliffe’s bid. He stated: “I would love to own a tiny percentage of the club I grew up cheering for as a boy.”
McIlroy also revealed he had a chance to invest in one of United’s biggest rivals but declined owing to his allegiances. “As a United fan I cannot go anywhere near that,” he remarked.
With his strong track record, supporters should be excited by the possibilities if Ratcliffe is given full control, McIlroy added. As a fan, he noted his excited optimism about the club’s future.
