May 14, (THEWILL) – Manchester City took a huge step towards retaining their English Premier League title with a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, on Tuesday night.
Erling Haaland’s second-half brace proved the difference as Pep Guardiola’s side leapfrogged Arsenal to go top of the table heading into the final day of the season. The first half was an evenly-contested affair, with both sides creating chances but failing to break the deadlock.
Tottenham had the better openings, with Brennan Johnson and Rodrigo Bentancur going close, while Guglielmo Vicario was forced into a smart save to deny Phil Foden at the other end. City eventually made the breakthrough in the 63rd minute when Kevin De Bruyne’s precise through ball was clinically dispatched by the prolific Haaland.

Tottenham pushed for an equaliser, with Son Heung-min squandering a glorious opportunity, before Haaland sealed the points from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time after Pedro Porro had brought down Jeremy Doku.
The result leaves City’s title destiny in their own hands, knowing a win at home to West Ham on the final day will secure a fourth successive EPL crown. For Tottenham, their hopes of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League are now over after a brave but ultimately fruitless performance.
