September 01, (THEWILL) – Manchester City have completed the signing of Portuguese midfielder, Matheus Nunes, from fellow English Premier League side, Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The 23-year-old joins the Citizens, in a deal understood to be worth £47 million, after an impressive debut season in England’s top flight, having moved to Wolves from Sporting Lisbon only last summer. He will provide competition for places in City’s midfield, which has already been strengthened by the arrival of Mateo Kovacic earlier this window.
Speaking after putting pen to paper on a long-term contract, Nunes expressed his delight at joining the reigning EPL champions. “The opportunity to work under Pep Guardiola and play alongside some of the best players in the world was something I couldn’t turn down”, he said.
Director of Football Txiki Begiristain believes Nunes will be a valuable addition to Guardiola’s squad. “He possesses real quality and will bring a fresh dynamic to this team,” he commented. “Everyone knows Pep improves players – we have seen it so often – and we cannot wait to see how Matheus develops under his management.”
In a separate development, 21-year-old midfielder Tommy Doyle has moved the other way to join Wolves on a season-long loan deal which also includes an option to buy.
