May 6, (THEWILL)- Chelsea continued their superb home form with a dominant 5-0 victory over West Ham United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Cole Palmer equalled the record for most English Premier League goals scored at the Bridge in a single season, netting his 16th of the campaign as Mauricio Pochettino’s side stayed firmly in the hunt for European qualification.
The tone was set after just 15 minutes when Palmer fired Chelsea ahead from close range. Conor Gallagher’s volley and Noni Madueke’s header put the Blues 3-0 up before half-time in a scintillating first-half display. Any faint hopes of a West Ham comeback were extinguished soon after the restart as Nicolas Jackson tapped in Chelsea’s fourth.
Despite hitting the woodwork three times through Jarrod Bowen, West Ham rarely threatened as their miserable afternoon was compounded by Jackson’s second goal late on. The routine victory extends Chelsea’s winning run at Stamford Bridge to seven games, with 24 goals scored in that blistering spell.
The Blues climb to seventh, just two points behind sixth-placed Newcastle, as they build momentum in the race for Europe. In contrast, West Ham’s European ambitions are fading fast after another away defeat that will increase scrutiny on manager David Moyes.
With just three EPL games remaining, Chelsea have hit top form at a good time under Pochettino. The Argentine will demand his side maintain these high standards in pursuit of at the very least a Europa League spot.
