March 07, (THEWILL) – The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has charged Ndigbo in Lagos to maintain peace with their hosts before, during and after the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
This is as it also urges Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to provide adequate security in Lagos, especially in various markets.
In a statement signed by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Secretary-General Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the apex Igbo organisation urges Ndigbo to vote their conscience in the March 11, 2023, governorship election but should do so in peace and harmony with their host communities.
Iziguzoro, however, retracted his earlier hostile posture against Governor Sanwo-Olu and congratulated the President-elect, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on his victory in the 2023 presidential election.
He urged Tinubu to reach out to other contestants in the spirit of sportsmanship and that the national healing process should begin with the President-elect personally reaching out to Atiku Abubakar and Mr. Peter Obi, in person not through proxies
“We are aware of the tension and anxieties building up and ranging from the South and spreading to every part of the country due to the poor performance of INEC over the conduct of the 2023 presidential election and that Nigerians had lost confidence in the electoral umpire but there should be room for improvement in the future, ” the statement said
He urged the President-elect not to victimise any section of the country, who voted against him but as the new political leader of the country, he should ensure that Nigerians, especially Ndigbo, are accommodated in the distribution of public amenities and provision of an enabling environment for businesses to thrive in the country.
He said the Ndigbo calls for the formation of Government of National Unity (GNU), saying this is one of the ingredients that will soothe nerves and restore peace across the country.
