January 26, (THEWILL) – Ligue 1 club Olympique Lyonnais have “categorically” denied rumours that they have reached an agreement with Newcastle United for midfielder Bruno Guimaraes’ transfer with the Brazilian midfielder heavily rumoured to have completed a deal with the Magpies.
According to some reports, the 24-year-old will shortly pass a physical before joining the Premier League club, while others indicate that a 40 million euro bid will suffice to seal the deal.
The French club, on the other hand, posted a statement on their website denying any agreement and it read:
“Olympique Lyonnais categorically deny the false reports spread by a number of outlets stating that there was an agreement between Newcastle and OL for the transfer of Brazilian international midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.
“In this transfer window where even the most baseless rumour is often presented as fact, Olympique Lyonnais ask that only official statements from the club are taken into consideration.”
As a holding midfielder, Guimaraes has scored three goals since joining Lyon from Atletico Paranaense in January 2020 and, according to rumours in France, the midfielder is still undecided about a potential move to Newcastle.
Magpies manager Eddie Howe had hoped to improve his team in all areas, and he has so far signed Chris Wood in attack and Kieron Trippier at right wing-back, leaving midfield as a vital area in the last days of the transfer window.
For that, Newcastle has been linked with Brighton’s Yves Bissouma, Leicester City’s Hamza Choudhury, and PSG’s Georginio Wijnaldum, who joined the French club on a free transfer last summer and may be the least likely to favour a move to St. James’ Park.
