August 31, (THEWILL) – Romelu Lukaku has joined Serie A side, Roma, on a season-long loan from Chelsea.
The Blues had been seeking a permanent transfer for the Belgian striker all summer but interest was limited after Lukaku turned down moves to Saudi Arabia and saw Inter Milan withdraw from the race. Juventus had offered to sign Lukaku permanently if they could sell Dusan Vlahovic, who was even offered to Chelsea as part of a deal which the Blues declined.
Ultimately, Chelsea agreed to another loan move and Roma emerged as front runners, with the deal now complete. The Belgian links up with former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho in Rome. “The welcome I’ve received from this club and its fans has excited me and given me more motivation,” Lukaku said. “As an opponent, I felt the atmosphere of the Stadio Olimpico, and felt the warmth of the Romanisti.”
“It’s nice to know I’m a part of it today. I recently spoke with the owners, and I was impressed by their ambition. Now we must work, be humble, and grow game by game,” Lukaku added.
Roma’s deal to sign the 29-year-old does not include an option or obligation to buy. Lukaku will be eager to rediscover his best form in Rome after a disappointing season back at Chelsea.
