January 29, (THEWILL) – Atalanta continued their impressive run of form and Ademola Lookman kept up his goal-scoring as La Dear earned a 2-0 victory over Sampdoria on Sunday.
The win saw Gian Piero Gasperini’s side move up the table into fourth place as they prepare for their upcoming Coppa Italia quarter-final against Inter. It was a game filled with action from start to finish, with both teams having their fair share of chances.
The first half saw Atalanta dominate possession, with Hans Hateboer and Harry Winks both coming close to scoring. However, it was Joakim Maehle who finally broke the deadlock for Atalanta just before half-time, with a header from a Jeremie Boga cross.
In the second half, Lookman’s confidence, buoyed by his impressive form in front of goal, was evident when he scored a wonderful solo effort. The Nigerian forward gathered the ball in midfield, nutmegged Nicola Murru and sold Bram Nuytinck a dummy before blasting the angled drive across Emil Audero into the far bottom corner for his 12th goal in 19 matches. Despite a late effort from debutant Malagrida, the match ended 2-0 in Atalanta’s favour.
While Atalanta are next up on Tuesday against Inter in the Coppa Italia, Sampdoria do not feature again until they travel to Monza on Monday, February 6, for their next Serie A encounter. Languishing in 19th place, they will hope to dig themselves out of the relegation red line in that tie.
