August 02, (THEWILL) – In a friendly tie on Wednesday, Liverpool put on an attacking performance against Bayern Munich, only to be pegged back by a late onslaught and lose 4-3.

The Reds’ fast and direct style of play allowed them to exploit spaces behind Bayern’s defence, resulting in a confident finish by Cody Gakpo just two minutes into the game. However, defensive vulnerabilities were, once again, evident as they conceded easily. Virgil van Dijk, captaining the team for the first time, managed to find the back of the net from a corner, but it was not enough to clinch victory.

The match against the German champions served as a crucial test for Liverpool, with Van Dijk leading the team from the front. The Dutchman’s header gave them a two-goal lead, but Bayern took advantage of attacks down Liverpool’s right side to level the score within nine minutes.

Manager Jurgen Klopp made strategic substitutions, introducing new signings Ibrahima Konate, Luis Diaz, and Darwin Nunez. Despite maintaining intensity throughout the match and producing moments of brilliance, including a devastating combination between Mohamed Salah and Diaz for the third goal, defensive issues persisted, resulting in a 4-3 defeat.

Liverpool’s pre-season performance has been marked by both impressive attacking moments and defensive concerns, reflecting the early years under Klopp. With 15 goals scored and 10 conceded in four matches, the team heads back to England for their final friendly. Though the overseas portion of their preparation has provided valuable insights for Klopp and his men, addressing identified defensive vulnerabilities will be crucial before the upcoming season.
