Legendary Rono, Who Set Four World Records In 81 Days, Dies At 72

February 15, (THEWILL) – World-renowned Kenyan long-distance runner, Henry Rono, has died at the age of 72, as confirmed by the country’s athletics governing body, Athletics Kenya.

Rono rocketed to fame in 1978 while a student at Washington State University in the United States, where he remarkably set four world records across various long-distance running events in just 81 days.

Specifically, between April and June 1978, Rono set astonishing new world records in the 3,000 metres, 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres events, as well as the gruelling 3,000 metre steeplechase. At the time, he was relatively unknown on the international stage, making his quartet of world records in such a short span even more remarkable.

With his sudden death at 72, the athletics world has lost one of the most uniquely talented and decorated long-distance runners of his era. Rono continued a proud tradition of Kenyan athletic success in long-distance running events.

To this day, Kenya produces more world-class runners than any other country, especially in races like the 5,000 and 10,000 metres. Rono joins the legendary likes of Kipchoge Keino as Kenyan running greats who captivated the world with their exceptional talent and inspired future generations to achieve their own success in the sport.

After retiring from professional athletics, Rono returned to Kenya and took up coaching roles to mentor the next crop of promising young Kenyan runners. Rono’s humble origins in Kenya’s rugged high-altitude Rift Valley region epitomise the upbringing of so many Kenyan athletes who grew up running several miles to school daily. This environment allows Kenyans’ unique physical advantages to shine through in long-distance running.

Rono’s death at 72 marks the end of an era, as a once-in-a-generation running talent. Although a cause of death was not mentioned, Athletics Kenya confirmed his passing on Thursday, prompting tributes from leading figures across the Kenyan sporting world. His legacy as one of Kenya’s most exceptionally gifted athletes will live on for generations to come.
