September 06, (THEWILL) – The Federal House of Representatives member, Kama Nkemkanma, representing Ohaozara/Onicha/Ivo Federal Constituency of Ebonyi State, has empowered about 400 rural female farmers for the farming season.
He disclosed this on Friday during an interactive session with students and teachers who participated in a holiday lesson he organised for his constituents tagged: “Hon. Kama Holiday Lesson”.
The lawmaker said the empowerment of the farmers was part of his effort to reduce food insecurity and hunger in the land.
According to him, 40 female farmers from each community that made up his constituency benefited from the farm inputs he distributed.
The lawmaker also distributed bags of fertiliser to farmers as part of his contribution to agricultural development in the school and beyond.
“In Agriculture, we did empower 400 women before the farming season, 40 female farmers per community. We gave them farm inputs to plant, and we will continue to do more”.
Kama said his aim was to take the students out of the streets for the long vacation and that over 500 students participated in the lesson programme out of which three students who performed exceptionally well were offered automatic scholarships to the university level to encourage others to study hard.
He also said he would introduce skill training into the holiday lesson as the programme will be running annually.
“Education is the bedrock, foundation of success without Education we have not started. So when you are prepared with your certificate, you wait for an opportunity to come. That is why to the best of my ability, I want every OHANIVO child to be educated.
“So the whole idea of a holiday lesson is to keep them out of the streets during the holiday. Keep their memories growing. It is going to be yearly by God’s grace. It is not a one-off thing just to make sure our children are in a confined space to learn better.
“We are trying to inculcate some other things like skills because these days you can see people doing different things to earn a living, such as carpentry, vulcaniser, hairstylist, fashion designer. So, we want to see how we can introduce it to schools and see how we can make practicals better than theory in our schools”, he stated.
