October 13, (THEWILL) – Neymar provided an assist for Brazil’s opening goal early on Friday, but could not prevent a dramatic late equaliser from Venezuela in their 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw on Thursday. The star forward saw his 50th minute corner headed home by Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhaes to give Brazil the lead.
However, Brazil couldn’t get the victory over Venezuela, as late substitute, Eduard Bello’s sensational 85th minute overhead kick snatched a share of the points for the visitors. Jefferson Savarino whipped in a cross that allowed Bello to blast past Ederson.
The draw leaves Brazil second in the South American qualifying standings on 28 points, two behind leaders, Argentina. In their own match, superstar Lionel Messi came off the bench to help Argentina overcome Paraguay 1-0 thanks to Nicolas Otamendi’s early goal, despite hitting the woodwork twice.
There was also late drama as Darwin Nunez’s stoppage time penalty secured Uruguay a 2-2 draw at Colombia. Ecuador picked up their first win, edging Bolivia 2-1 with a last gasp winner. Chile beat Peru 2-0.
With three wins from three matches, Messi’s Argentina remain top of the 10-team group as the race to reach next year’s World Cup in Qatar intensifies. Neymar and Brazil will be frustrated at missing the chance to extend their unbeaten run over Venezuela.
