June 21, (THEWILL) – Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, stated on Tuesday, that the team will play its 2023/2024 season at the Olympic Stadium in Montjuic.
As THEWILL previously reported, the Catalan giants will be forced to leave their magnificent Camp Nou stadium while much-needed renovations are carried out. Work is expected to begin this summer, but Barcelona will have the opportunity to play at home in 2022/2023 before moving.
Before the team arrives, Laporta confirmed that the Olympic Stadium will be given a short makeover. He elaborated: “We have committed to adapting the Olympic facilities to ensure comfort on match day, and we will modernise some spaces and services, such as the press box, the changing rooms and an internal parking area. But the facilities are very good, in very good condition.”
Barcelona’s local rivals Espanyol used to play at the Olympic Stadium, which has a capacity of 60,713. It is Spain’s fifth largest stadium, and it also hosted the 1992 Olympic Games.
The redevelopment of Barcelona’s Camp Nou is projected to take four years and will boost the stadium’s capacity from 99,000 to 110,000. A retractable roof with solar panels will be built, as well as a 360-degree screen that will wrap around the whole interior of the stadium.
