November 4, (THEWILL) – Keisha Lance Bottoms, former mayor of Atlanta, has made history as the first Black woman elected governor of a United States state, defeating Republican billionaire businessman, Rick Jackson, in Georgia’s November 3 gubernatorial election.

Bottoms, 56, also becomes the first Democrat elected governor of Georgia since 1998, ending nearly three decades of Republican control of the state’s governorship.

Her victory comes despite Jackson’s massive financial investment in the race, with the healthcare entrepreneur reportedly spending more than $200 million of his personal fortune on his campaign.

Bottoms’ election is particularly significant in Georgia, a southern state whose history is deeply intertwined with slavery, racial segregation and the civil rights movement.

She will become the first woman and first Black person to occupy the state’s highest executive office.

Bottoms Ran On Anti-Trump Platform

From the outset of the campaign, Bottoms positioned herself as a strong opponent of President Donald Trump, seeking to capitalise on dissatisfaction with his administration in a state he won in the 2024 presidential election.

She repeatedly criticised Trump’s policies and sought to mobilise voters concerned about inflation, rising fuel prices, the cost of living, access to affordable healthcare and the administration’s unpopular war with Iran.

Trump’s political baggage in Georgia also featured prominently in the campaign, particularly his indictment over efforts to overturn his defeat in the state during the 2020 presidential election.

Bottoms also made voting rights a central issue, following a Supreme Court decision earlier this year that weakened key provisions of the Voting Rights Act, one of the landmark achievements of the American civil rights movement.

She pledged to protect access to the ballot and safeguards for minority representation, at a time when voting restrictions introduced by Republican lawmakers had become a major concern among Black voters and other minority communities.

Her campaign also sought to address concerns over healthcare affordability and the economic pressures confronting ordinary Georgians.

Overcame Doubts Over Atlanta Mayoral Record

Bottoms’ emergence as the Democratic candidate was not without challenges, as questions over her record as Atlanta mayor threatened her prospects in the statewide contest.

She served as mayor of Atlanta from 2018 to 2022 but faced criticism over rising crime and public safety concerns during her tenure. The controversies contributed to declining support and her eventual decision not to seek re-election.

Her political opponents and some members of her party questioned whether she could overcome those concerns to win a statewide election.

However, Bottoms confounded expectations by securing the Democratic nomination outright in a crowded primary, avoiding a runoff against other party contenders.

Jackson, who entered the race as a political novice with limited statewide name recognition, also defied expectations by securing the Republican nomination against established politicians.

He defeated three candidates who had each previously won statewide elections, including prominent figures within Georgia’s Republican political establishment.

His campaign was built largely around his personal story of growing up in poverty and neglect, spending time in foster care and eventually becoming one of Georgia’s wealthiest businessmen.

Jackson accumulated much of his fortune through medical staffing companies, alongside investments in real estate, a Texas data centre and faith-based film productions.

He reportedly committed more than $200 million of his personal wealth to the gubernatorial contest, significantly outspending Bottoms.

His campaign also benefited from Trump’s endorsement, with Jackson presenting himself as a political ally of the president.

However, his financial advantage and political backing were insufficient to secure victory against Bottoms, who made her opposition to Trump’s policies a defining feature of her campaign.

Georgia’s Changing Political Landscape

Bottoms’ victory marks another major development in Georgia’s changing political landscape, with the state having moved from a dependable Republican stronghold to one of the most closely contested states in American politics.

Republicans have controlled the governorship since 2003, with Brian Kemp, the incumbent, completing his second term. Georgia’s constitutional term limits prevent him from seeking another consecutive term.

The state has also become increasingly important in national elections, particularly after Joe Biden’s victory there in the 2020 presidential election and the subsequent election of two Democratic senators, Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff.

Her victory also represents a landmark in Black political representation in the United States, where only three Black men had previously been elected governors.

Bottoms is the first Black woman to win a gubernatorial election in the country, adding a new chapter to the political history of Georgia, a state that played a central role in the struggle for racial equality and voting rights.
