April 12, (THEWILL) – Kano State Police Command is investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged beheading of a minor, Mohammed Saidu, by an Almajiri (Qur’anic pupil), at Kanwa village in Madobi Local Government Area.
A statement issued by the Commissioner of Police in the state, Usaini Gumel, on Friday, said the 6-year-old Saidu was allegedly killed by the 16-year-old Almajiri, simply called Abdullahi.
Gumel said Abdullahi, who hailed from Zamfara State, was sighted at Kanwa village by a good Samaritan while in possession of a blood-stained knife, strongly suspected to be human blood.
Upon searching, he said the headless body of Saidu was found in a nearby primary school.
He said the suspect was then taken to the house of the village head to prevent him from being lynched.
Despite efforts by the village head, however, an angry mob overwhelmed him, descended on the suspect and inflicted serious injuries on him, the commissioner said.
He said the police rushed to the scene and that on their arrival, the suspect confessed to the crime, saying he dumped the head of the victim in a pit latrine adjacent to the primary school.
He said the suspect was taken to the Kwankwaso Cottage Hospital, but died while receiving treatment.
The severed body and the head of the victim were moved to the hospital for examination and confirmation and later released to his relatives for burial.
