Kanno’s Last Gasp Free-Kick Earns Saudi Arabia Draw Against Nigeria

October 13, (THEWILL) – Nigeria were held to a 2-2 draw by Saudi Arabia in an international friendly at the Estadio Municipal de Portimao on Friday. Jose Peseiro’s Super Eagles looked set for victory after Kelechi Iheanacho’s 81st-minute strike had put them 2-1 up. However, a last-gasp free-kick from Mohamed Kanno, deep into stoppage time, earned Saudi Arabia a share of the spoils.

The first half was an even affair with both sides creating chances. Victor Osimhen went close for Nigeria while Fahad Al Muwallad forced a save from Francis Uzoho for the Saudis. The deadlock was broken on 60 minutes when Salman Al Faraj curled in a free-kick to give Saudi Arabia the lead.

Nigeria equalised in the 73rd-minute courtesy of an own goal from Abdulelah Al Amri. Iheanacho then looked to have won it for the Super Eagles after coming off the bench to fire them ahead with nine minutes left. But in the 100th minute, Kanno stepped up to score a free-kick and snatch a late point for the Green Falcons.

The draw ended Nigeria’s run of three straight victories as Saudi Arabia began Roberto Mancini’s term as coach of the Gulf nation. Both sides will be pleased to avoid defeat as they continue preparations for their various competitions.
