January 21, (THEWILL) – Werder Bremen pulled off a shock 1-0 away victory over Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich on Saturday, ending a run of 34 matches without a win against the Bavarian giants. The upset leaves Bayern seven points behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen in the title race.
The only goal of the match came in the 59th minute courtesy of a long-range strike by former Bayern player Mitchell Weiser. His powerful left-footed effort flew past Manuel Neuer into the top corner, capping off an impressive counterattacking display by the visitors from the first half.
Bayern, featuring top scorer Harry Kane up front, dominated possession but struggled to break down a resilient Werder defence marshalled by goalkeeper Michael Zetterer. Zetterer made several fine saves to deny the likes of Leroy Sane, Dayot Upamecano and substitute Mathys Tel.
The shock result ends Bayern’s 65-match scoring run at the Allianz Arena in the Bundesliga and hands them their second league defeat this season. Meanwhile, Werder’s 11-match winless away run has come to an emphatic end, lifting them to 12th position.
The match will go down as one of the biggest Bundesliga upsets in recent years. Bayern must now attempt to claw back Leverkusen’s lead at the top of the table, while Werder will hope this memorable victory sparks a turnaround in their league campaign.
