August 07, (THEWILL) – Chelsea’s English Premier League campaign got off to a winning start thanks to Jorginho’s first-half penalty, as Thomas Tuchel’s team defeated a resolute Everton to win 1-0 at Goodison Park.
Salomon Rondon’s ban and Dominic Calvert-knee Lewin’s injury left the hosts without an out-and-out centre forward, but Frank Lampard’s team sat deep and successfully frustrated Chelsea in the opening stages.
However, Everton’s defence was finally broken when Jorginho scored from the penalty spot just before halftime. The offender, Abdoulaye Doucoure, was punished for bringing down Ben Chilwell as the wingback charged into the area.
Despite a better performance after the break, the Toffees were unable to get past Edouard Mendy. And, in spite of failing to put up a flowing performance on Merseyside, Tuchel’s changes won their Premier League opener for a third consecutive season as a result.
The next Premier League match Everton will play is on the road the following Saturday against Aston Villa. The first home game of the season for Chelsea is also on Sunday against Tottenham.
