September 25, (THEWILL) – The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command said relevant authorities have begun investigations into the cause of the fire outbreak at the Supreme Court in Abuja.
Spokesperson of the Command, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this on Monday.
THEWILL earlier reported that a section of the Supreme Court building complex in Abuja was gutted by fire on Monday morning.
SP Adeh said the situation was already under control as personnel of the fire service and the police were on ground. She added that the chambers of two judges were affected by the fire outbreak.
The police spokeswoman said the two chambers of two judges are affected and the properties destroyed are yet to be ascertained at the moment.
She added that the cause of the fire outbreak was still being investigated by appropriate authorities
Earlier, Spokesperson of the Court, Festus Akande, blamed the inferno on an electrical fault.
“Yes, there was a fire that perhaps resulted from an electrical fault in the section of a justice’s chamber of the court. But the fire is not as serious as they make it appear on social media. From what is being said on social media, it is as if someone went there and set the whole Supreme Court on fire; it is not so,” he said.
Akande also dismissed fears that the fire outbreak would affect the appeal filed by the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, and his counterpart in the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, against the judgment of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC), which upheld the victory of President Bola Tinubu in the February 25 presidential election.
