November 10, (THEWILL) – Worried by millions of small and light ammunition in circulation in Nigeria, a Non Governmental Organisation ( NGO) under the aegis of Leadership Initiative for Transportation and empowerment ( LITE Africa) has built an armoury shelter for protection of firearms in their custody.
Presenting the building to Officers at Oron Control Post of Nigeria Immigration Service in Akwa Ibom state on Wednesday, the Executive Director of Lite Africa Dr Joel Bisina said the building would assist Immigration Outstation to check proliferation of firearms in the society .
Bisina who was represented by Administration Manager of Lite Africa Mr Tolu Oyero said apart from preventing proliferation of small arms at the border area, provision of the structure would promote peace and security around the borders in the coastal Community.
“This is aimed at preventing further proliferation of illicit trafficking and small arms and light weapons in Nigeria and promote peace and security in our borders ”
“The small and light weapons action is designed to sensitize border Communities, strengthen the capacity of national security institutions personnel on border as well as arm stockpile management, armoury security and armed destruction including provision of alternative livelihoods in benefitting states.
He said the Organisation has provided seven Shelter / Tents Armoury Containers for security personnel in seven selected border Communities in various states .
“The 40ft solar powered shelter/ tent armoury provides shelter/office space for security personnel . We also provide five weapon storage containers. All these facilities were donated to boost the morale of security personnel and facilitate arms / weapon collection exercises at the border areas ” he said.
Bisina disclosed that LITE Africa has intervened in seven states assisting them to curtail and mobbed small weapons to prevent crime in the society
He listed the befitting states to include Akwa Ibom , Cross River , Kaduna , Katsina , Sokoto , Kebbi and Zamfara states .
He mentioned the dangers of illicit proliferation light weapons in the society as militancy, terrorism , insurgency and banditry adding that the organization will further strengthen its machinery to stem the tide of crime in Nigeria .
