July 29, (THEWILL) – The Leadership of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Phase 3, wishes to inform the general public of its’ inconclusive decision on whether to engage in the forthcoming National Protest scheduled to start on August 1, 2024.
This was contained in a press statement signed by Elaye Slaboh, National Chairman of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, phase 3.
According to the statement, “Protest is a guaranteed right of citizens in every democratic society incorporated both in our domestic laws and international human rights instruments. From the lens of history, we are fully aware of the foreseeable outcomes and probable results of protests of this nature which have the youths at the fore and which are founded on the basis of economic hardship, inflation, harsh economic policies, over-taxation, starvation, unemployment, insecurity, and essentially bad governance and unbearable living.
“As ex-militants, we understand our role in promoting National Security, hence, we are having an ongoing consultation with the Elders and Stakeholders of the Niger Delta region on whether to engage in the protest or not. To this end, we urge all the ex-agitators under the Presidential Amnesty Programme Third Phase to remain calm and resolute, maintaining peace and order while our consultation continues.”
He said their resolution shall be made known to the public within the next 48 hours whether they shall engage in the protest or not. While they hope and pray for the peace of the country, just as he urged everyone to stay safe.
