October 02, (THEWILL) – The lawmaker representing Borno South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Mohammed Ali Ndume, has urged President Bola Tinubu to contract mercenaries to fight Boko Haram and bandits in the country.
The suggestion comes amid ongoing violence in northern Nigeria, with both Boko Haram insurgents and bandits continuing to pose significant security challenges.
The insurgents, in a fresh attack on Ngoshe, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno, killed six farmers and abducted five others including women.
In a statement on Wednesday, Ndume emphasised the effectiveness of military contractors in dealing with security challenges, proposing their involvement as a temporary solution to Nigeria’s ongoing insecurity crisis.
“All across the world, governments hire the services of military contractors to engage in certain places. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu can consider this as a short-term measure. These contractors will work with our military and Civilian JTF, who understand the terrain”, he said.
He further highlighted the advantages of hiring contractors, noting their advanced equipment and military hardware.
“In a very short time, they’ll eliminate those Boko Haram terrorists. The contractors can also be used to eliminate those bandits operating in the north-west”, Ndume added.
He also proposed that the federal government recruit more youths into the military, raising the force to at least one million personnel, while contractors handle the immediate security threats.
He praised the Nigerian military and Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) for their bravery but noted that they are under-equipped to fully eliminate the remaining insurgents in the region.
