August 08, (THEWILL) – Robert Helenius has been thrust into the spotlight as he steps in to replace Dillian Whyte in the boxing matchup against Anthony Joshua.
The cancellation of the Whyte rematch, prompted by adverse findings from a recent doping test, has paved the way for Helenius to enter the ring on short notice. Fresh from his victory over Mika Mielonen, the 39-year-old pugilist has shown determination to reap from his fortune: “This is not an opportunity I was going to let slip away. I plan to make the most of it!”
Joshua, undeterred by the sudden change in opponent, maintains his laser focus on the forthcoming challenge. Reflecting on the situation, Joshua remarked: “This wasn’t in the script,” but he said he had respect for Helenius and any athlete who steps into the ring. Having sparred with Helenius in the past, Joshua acknowledges the quality of his opponent while emphasising his own determination to secure victory. “I can make steps forward to bigger and better things but the road map has a checkpoint, Saturday night. May the best man win,” he said.
Joshua’s sights are set on redemption as he makes his way back to the top after consecutive losses to Oleksandr Usyk. He is aiming to triumph over Helenius and set his path towards future greatness.
Meanwhile, in the broader landscape of heavyweight boxing, the spotlight also falls on the impending clash between undefeated unified champion Usyk and mandatory challenger Daniel Dubois, set to unfold in Wroclaw, Poland, on August 26th. Joshua will take on Helenius at London’s O2 Arena on August 12th.
