October 02, (THEWILL) – Arsenal earned their first UEFA Champions League win of the season with a 2-0 triumph over Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday. The Gunners’ dominance was inspired by the impressive performances of Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka, who each found the back of the net at the Arsenal Stadium.
Havertz’s headed goal in the 20th minute set the tone, as the German forward rewarded Arsenal’s relentless pressure with the opening strike. Saka then doubled the hosts’ advantage just 15 minutes later, with a curling free-kick that caught the PSG goalkeeper off guard.
The victory moved Mikel Arteta’s side onto four points in their UCL group, following their earlier draw against Atalanta. After being eliminated by Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals last season and narrowly missing out on the League title to Manchester City, Arsenal have now extended their unbeaten run to nine games across all competitions.
There was further good news for the Gunners as Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino made his long-awaited debut, coming on for the final 30 minutes. Merino’s recovery from a shoulder injury sustained in pre-season provided a welcome boost for Arteta, with Martin Odegaard currently sidelined.
Despite the absence of Ousmane Dembele, who was left out of the PSG squad after a reported clash with manager Luis Enrique, the visitors struggled to make an impact. Arsenal’s composed and disciplined performance ensured they saw out the victory, with the north London club now firmly in the running to reach the knockout stage of the UCL for another campaign.
