November 05, (THEWILL) – Erling Haaland’s thrilling stoppage-time penalty sent Manchester City to the top of the Premier League when they defeated Fulham 2-1 at home on Saturday, after being reduced to ten men for more than an hour.
Pep Guardiola’s team was ferocious at the start of the game, grabbing a well-deserved lead as they rushed and overwhelmed their opponents, much like the relentless rain in Manchester. However, Fulham started to push back as the rain persisted before City was reduced to 10 men in the first 30 minutes.
For causing the penalty that Andreas Pereira successfully converted for Fulham’s equaliser, Joao Cancelo was correctly shown the red card. City struggled to find the winning goal and the opportunity came from a penalty Fulham could have avoided.
Leading goalscorer, Haaland, came off the bench to first score from a Kevin De Bruyne assist in the 74th minute, which was scratched off because he was marginally offside before he stole all three points for City at the very last second with a penalty.
Next Saturday, City will play Brentford at the Etihad Stadium in their final match before the World Cup break. The following day, Manchester United will visit Craven Cottage to face Fulham.
