November 27, (THEWILL) – Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has hinted that he may extend his current contract, which runs until 2025, after previously being expected to leave the English Premier League champions.
In an interview ahead of City’s UEFA Champions League clash with RB Leipzig, Guardiola responded to a question asking if a contract extension was possible by saying “Yeah, of course.” He continued, “I would have loved the team that won 100 points [in 2017-18] to stay eternally. At all the clubs this happens.”
The 52-year-old signed a two-year extension last November, but reports had suggested he would depart when that deal expired. However, Guardiola has overseen a period of great success at City, winning five league titles and numerous domestic cups along with the UCL last season.
City have continued their strong form this campaign, sealing qualification for the UCL knockout stage with four wins from four games ahead of the Leipzig match. They do have some injury concerns though, with Jack Grealish, Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes all facing late fitness tests.
Kevin De Bruyne is also still recovering from a hamstring problem, but should return early next year according to Guardiola, who said: “If he [De Bruyne] said ‘January’ it will be January.” Securing key players like De Bruyne to new deals could be a factor in convincing Guardiola to stay on longer.
