November 27, (THEWILL) – Granada have parted ways with manager Paco Lopez, just months after he led them to promotion from the second division. Granada made the announcement on Sunday, following their 11th straight La Liga match without a win, a dismal 3-1 defeat away at Deportivo Alavés.
Currently languishing in 19th place in the table with only 7 points from their opening 14 games, Granada’s return to the top flight after a single season in the second tier has not gone according to plan under Lopez.
Making matters worse, the club were embarrassingly disqualified from this season’s Copa del Rey tournament for fielding an ineligible player.
Lopez was appointed manager in November 2022 when Granada were struggling in Spain’s second division. In an impressive turnaround, he led them to the Segunda title just months later, earning promotion at the first time of asking. However, Granada have been unable to transfer that success back to La Liga. Saturday’s loss at Alavés made Lopez’s position untenable.
In a club statement, Granada announced that Lopez and his entire technical staff have left the club by mutual consent. The search now begins for the man who can revive Granada’s fortunes and help them avoid an immediate return to the second division. With less than half the season played, the club will be hoping a change in the dugout can spark an upturn in form.
