Fan Death Halts Bilbao Vs Granada La Liga Fixture

December 10, (THEWILL) – A Sunday La Liga match between Granada and Athletic Bilbao was abandoned after a home supporter died in the stands at Estadio Nuevo los Carmenes. The incident occurred 15 minutes into the tie.

Athletic had grabbed an early 1-nil lead on an Inaki Williams goal. However, around the quarter-hour mark, officials were notified of a medical emergency in the crowd. As emergency responders tended to the stricken fan, players were eventually escorted off the pitch.

La Liga soon after confirmed the tragic passing of the Granada supporter. All parties agreed to postpone the match to a later rescheduled date out of respect for the deceased. Both Granada and Bilbao issued statements expressing their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

“We want to send our most sincere condolences to the family and friends, as well as to the entire Granada family,” said the home club in their statement. Visitors Bilbao echoed similar sympathies for the loss of life.
