May 23, (THEWILL) – Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano, who was dethroned in 2020, is expected to be reinstated by the governor Abba Kabir Yusuf-led administration, following the repeal of the Emirate Council law by the State House of Assembly on Thursday.

THEWILL reports that the Kano State House of Assembly, on Thursday, passed into law, the Kano State Emirate Council Law (amendment 2) into law.

The repealed law, known as the Kano State Emirs (Appointment and Deposition) Law, was promulgated in 2019 by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s administration. After the law was signed in 2019, Sanusi’s Kano emirate was broken into five, in order to whittle down his influence. However, he was eventually removed and replaced with his cousin, Aminu Ado Bayero.

But with the new amendment on Thursday, the new law abolished the Emirate Council Law and dissolved all the five Emirates created by the Ganduje administration; thus reinstating the position of the Emir of Kano, which is presently vacant.

However, credible inside sources, who spoke exclusively to Leadership, said Sanusi automatically stands reinstated, but must wait until Governor Yusuf assents to the new law.

“So certainly with the passage of the Bill, Sanusi automatically stands reinstated. No need for confirmation, the thing is to wait for the Governor to assent to it”, the sources said.

Speaking shortly after the passage of the bill into law on Thursday, Majority Leader of the Assembly, Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, said the new amendment mandated the governor to call on the traditional kingmakers to choose a new king.

“The bill has been sent to the governor for assent, now there is no longer an active Emir in Kano in all the five Emirates; Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano and Karaye. The law now provides the governor to call on the traditional kingmakers to choose a new king”, he said.
