German FA Retain Confidence In Low After Scrutiny Over 6-0 Loss To Spain

World cup-winning coach Joachim Low will retain his position as Germany’s head coach after intense scrutiny recently over his future on the heels of the 6-0 trouncing suffered against Spain.

Incalculable pressure came to bear on the Mannschaft boss following the Nations League humbling earlier this month and the German Football Association (DFB) confirmed that there would be a “timetable” to assess the “situation”.

Therefore, on Monday, the governing body publicly reaffirmed its support for the 60-year-old to put to rest all rumours about the termination of his long tenure which dates back to 2006.

This comes on the back of crunch talks between Low and senior members of the DFB, including national team director Oliver Bierhoff. In their statement expressing their confidence in the manager, they stated:

“It was important for the national coach to discuss the current situation, the defeat against Spain and the months ahead of the European Championship in an open, constructive and intensive exchange.

“In the process, Joachim Low informed those involved about his assessments, ideas and further plans.

“The members of the Executive Committee agreed that what counts is the high-quality work of the coaching staff, the intact relationship between the team and the coach and a clear concept for the previous and future procedures.

“A single game cannot and must not be a yardstick for the general performance of the national team and the national coach.”

The loss was Germany’s heaviest defeat since a 1931 friendly when they lost by the same scoreline to Austria. Also, it was the most goals conceded by Manuel Neuer, who set a new record for a German goalkeeper by winning his 96th cap, in a competitive match ever.

The German national team will be keen for considerable improvement prior to next year’s rescheduled Euro 2020 tournament. They have been drawn in a tough Group F alongside world champions France, holders Portugal and Hungary.
