September 29, (THEWILL) – Manchester United have been dealt a fresh injury blow, with defender, Lisandro Martinez, set for an extended spell on the sidelines due to a foot injury. The centre-back aggravated an existing problem during the 3-1 defeat to Arsenal last month.
However, Martinez continued to feature against Brighton and Hove Albion and Bayern Munich before the extent of the injury was revealed. United are still assessing the exact timeframe for Martinez’s return. But the Argentina international is expected to miss a significant number of matches as he recovers. The 25-year-old has made six appearances in all competitions since his summer move from Ajax.
His absence leaves manager Erik ten Hag short on options in defence. Tottenham loanee Sergio Reguilon is also a doubt for the upcoming English Premier League match against Crystal Palace. The manager will hope to have both players back fit as soon as possible. However, for now, he must find solutions within his squad.
United returned to winning ways last week with a 1-0 victory at Burnley. The result leaves them ninth in the table on nine points after six games. Palace have eight points from their opening six matches and sit one place below United. The two sides meet at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Ten Hag will be keen to build momentum after also defeating the Eagles 3-0 in the League Cup in midweek. However, Martinez’s injury comes at an inopportune time. The manager must shuffle his pack as United look to climb the EPL standings.
