FIFA Re-Elects Gianni Infantino For Third Term As President Until 2027

March 16, (THEWILL) – In a unanimous decision, FIFA has confirmed that Gianni Infantino has been re-elected as president until 2027.

This marks the third time the Swiss national will take the role, having first been elected in 2016 and then again in 2019. This year, he ran unopposed, securing his re-election.

“Being President of FIFA is an incredible honour, an incredible privilege,” Infantino expressed in a statement. “It is also a great, great responsibility.” He went on to express his gratitude for the support and promised to continue serving FIFA, football all over the world, and all 211 member associations of FIFA.

Despite FIFA rules stating that a president can only serve a maximum of three four-year terms, Infantino is looking to stay on until 2031. He argued that his first spell in 2016, after replacing Sepp Blatter, did not count as a full term.

The Governance, Audit and Compliance Committee accepted this argument, freeing Infantino up to run for the position again in 2027, if the circumstances are favourable and he wishes to continue.
