January 18, (THEWILL) – The Federal Government through the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has filed an amended 20-count charge before a Federal Capital Territory High Court, in Abuja, against Godwin Emefiele, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The amended charge borders on criminal breach of trust, forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery, procurement fraud and conspiracy to commit a felony.

THEWILL reports that the latest development comes two months after the Federal Government filed a six-count amended charge bordering on an alleged breach of procurement procedure in the award of the contract to April 1616 Investment Limited.

In that charge, Emefiele was the sole defendant but Justice Hamza Muazu on November 22, 2023, granted him bail in the sum of N300 million.

However, when the case came up for hearing on Thursday, EFCC lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo, informed the court that the anti-graft agency on Wednesday, filed another amended charge of 20 counts against the former apex bank chief.

Responding, Emefiele’s counsel, Matthew Burkaa (SAN), told the court that he needed time to study the new charge sheet.

Subsequently, Justice Muazu adjourned the case until Friday, January 19.
