The prevailing normlessness in Nigeria, coupled with a justice system that enables criminals until they are proven guilty, was underlined recently by the revelation of a recovered N1.33 trillion in cash and assets by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The disclosure was made in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, by Theresa Nwosu, who represented the resident directors of anti-corruption agencies at a two-day workshop for journalists on addressing illicit financial flows in Nigeria, organised by the Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ).

EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, disclosed this during a media interactive session organised to mark his third year in office, stressing that preventing the dissipation of illicit funds was becoming more effective than investigating crimes after the money had already disappeared.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has challenged former Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva, to make himself available for questioning over an alleged $14.86 million fraud, hours after he accused the anti-graft agency of operating as an arm of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The EFCC chairman also revealed that at least five officers are currently being prosecuted for alleged corrupt practices, while case files involving other personnel are being prepared for prosecution.
