October 14, (THEWILL) – Manchester City’s Ferran Torres has suffered a minor foot fracture while on international duty with Spain.
He suffered the injury after a hefty challenge from Chelsea’s Jorginho, limping off soon after halftime in Spain’s Nations League semi-final victory.
After the game, Luis Enrique mentioned the injury, but Torres still started in the final against France, where the attacker played 84 minutes.
According to a statement from City: “Ferran Torres has suffered an injury to his right foot whilst on international duty. The City forward, who scored
twice in Spain’s UEFA Nations League semi-final victory over Italy and also started the showpiece final against France, has picked up a small fracture.
“He has since returned to Manchester for tests and will continue to be monitored.”
On Saturday afternoon, City will play Burnley at the Etihad. The English Premier League champions are currently in third place in the league, two points adrift of Chelsea. Torres has two goals and an assist for the champions this season. Both goals came against Arsenal.
City have a plethora of replacements, both in terms of quantity and quality. Torres’ absence, however, deprives them of the player most naturally suited to the role, with the manager favouring a false nine on occasion this season. If Guardiola opts for a specialist striker, Gabriel Jesus will see more minutes, while Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, and Phil Foden are all capable of playing the false nine role.
