October 21, (THEWILL) – Spanish La Liga side Sevilla have lodged a formal complaint to LaLiga following Sunday’s controversial 4-1 league defeat at Real Madrid.
The club felt that the refereeing decisions put them at a disadvantage at the Bernabeú.
The Andalusian club claimed that some important actions were broadcast without sufficient repetition, while the penalty awarded in favour of Real Madrid against Kylian Mbappe was shown several times from different angles.
Sevilla coach Luis Garcia Plaza was livid when Arda Güler was not sent off for an elbow on Gerard “Peque” Fernandez — which occurred when the game was scoreless — saying his team was “denied the chance to play another game, 11 against 10.”
Guler went ahead to score the first goal of the game in the 30th minute.
Sevilla highlighted the unequal and inadequate coverage in the broadcast and replays of decisive moments in the match in a statement on their website.
The statement read: “Sevilla FC considers it unacceptable that the television broadcast—key to transparency and any potential VAR reviews—is guided by the criteria publicly outlined by LaLiga’s production manager, such as dependence on player protests, the referee’s initial decision, the director’s subjectivity, justification based on the needs of live broadcasting, player tracking and VAR selection, and a lack of editorial transparency.

“LaLiga must make public the protocols and discretionary powers that govern audiovisual production.”
Sevilla also claimed that Cucurella’s play on Peque, Arda Güler’s elbow and the foul prior to Real Madrid’s second goal were intentionally omitted from the official match summary, despite the existence of images (later broadcast by operators such as Movistar Plus+ or DAZN).
Sevilla have also asked LaLiga for a “thorough investigation” into what happened and for measures to be taken “to ensure impartial, consistent and fair treatment of all clubs in the competition.”
Moreover, the club stressed their differences of opinion and disagreement with the explanation given to them by Spain’s Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) during their meeting on Tuesday where they discussed the controversial incidents during the game.
Real Madrid recorded a 4-1 victory in the encounter thanks to a brace from Kylian Mbappe, Arda Guler and Yan Diomande.
