June 02, (THEWILL) – Rio Ferdinand, the former Manchester United defender, and the Welsh football legend Gareth Bale, are among the sportsmen to be honoured by Queen Elizabeth II in her Platinum Jubilee Honours list.
This weekend, the Queen will become the first monarch in British history to reach 70 years on the throne, and she will honour 1,000 people for their contributions as part of the celebration.
Several football figures appear on the list, with ex-England international Ferdinand being the most prominent. For his activism and charity efforts, the 43-year-old will be awarded an OBE, as his Foundation strives to help young people in underserved areas.
Bale will be awarded an MBE for his contributions to football and charity. He announced his departure from Real Madrid on Wednesday after his fifth Champions League trophy, and if his country beats Ukraine on Sunday, they will qualify for their first World Cup since 1958.
James Milner will receive an MBE for his charitable work, with his foundation promoting healthy activities for children and providing financial aid to those in need. Also, Luther Blissett of Watford and Mike Summerbee of Manchester City will be awarded OBEs, while former England captain Carol Thomas will receive a BEM.
