September 15, (THEWILL) – The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has tracked down and arrested Emylee Thai, a fugitive accused of participating in a healthcare fraud scheme that allegedly siphoned more than $100 million from the US Medicare system.
Thai was apprehended in Vietnam after spending years outside the reach of American authorities, marking a breakthrough in the FBI’s campaign against high-value fraud suspects who flee the United States.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest in a post on X, saying Thai had been on the run since 2022 and was believed to have been hiding in Vietnam since at least 2023.
Patel said the FBI was working with international law enforcement partners to secure Thai’s return to the United States, where she is expected to face prosecution over the alleged fraud.
Thai faces charges including conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and conspiracy to defraud the United States, among other offences.
Alleged $100m Medicare Scheme
Thai, a former medical laboratory owner in Houston, Texas, was accused of involvement in a large-scale Medicare genetic-testing and kickback scheme.
According to information previously released by US authorities, her laboratory allegedly billed Medicare about $142 million for genetic testing and received approximately $95 million in payments on those claims.
Investigators alleged that the scheme involved medically unnecessary genetic tests, with marketers allegedly obtaining signed doctors’ orders and patient DNA samples and referring them to Thai’s laboratory in exchange for a share of Medicare reimbursements.
The allegations formed the basis of the federal case against Thai and elevated her from an ordinary fraud suspect to an international fugitive.

Authorities said Thai was originally charged in 2022. She subsequently disappeared while facing federal proceedings, triggering a manhunt that eventually extended beyond US borders.
She allegedly cut off her electronic monitoring and could no longer be located. Investigators subsequently believed she had fled the United States, reportedly travelling to Vietnam.
The arrest in Vietnam now brings an end to the years-long flight, although Thai’s legal battle is expected to continue as American authorities work through the process of securing her return to the United States.
Patel said Thai was the sixth suspect on the FBI’s new Most Wanted Fraudsters list to be captured since the list was established three months ago.
The six suspects, according to the FBI director, are collectively accused of more than $2 billion in fraud. They also spent a combined more than 4,000 days on the run before being captured.
Patel thanked the US Department of Justice, the White House Fraud Task Force, and other law enforcement partners for their roles in the operation.
He said the initiative was being carried out under the leadership of President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.
