Ex-F1 Race Driver Tambay Dies At 73

December 04, THEWILL) – Patrick Tambay, a former Formula 1 driver, passed away at age 73 after a protracted battle against Parkinson’s disease battle.

The family of the Frenchman, who raced in F1 for two seasons between 1977 and 1986, competing in 123 Grands Prix and taking home two victories, made the announcement of his passing public on Sunday.

Tambay debuted at the 1977 French Grand Prix with the Surtees team before switching to Theodore. He spent the next two seasons with McLaren and moved to the Can-Am championship, where he won his second championship after his first in his initial season in the circuit.

After some time off competitive racing, Tambay made his F1 comeback in 1981 with Ligier. A year later, he switched to Ferrari, where he won the German Grand Prix in 1982 and the San Marino GP the following year.

Despite never winning the Drivers Championship, Tambay finished the 1983 season in fourth place. The following year, he competed for Renault, where he stayed for two years until switching to Haas for his final campaign.
