December 21, (THEWILL) – A court ruling on Thursday, stating that UEFA and FIFA cannot legally obstruct the creation of a European Super League, has led to renewed debate around the controversial proposal. However, most of Europe’s top football clubs remain staunchly opposed to the concept.
In 2021, plans for a Super League involving some of the continent’s elite teams were met with immense backlash from fans and governing bodies alike. Although Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus continue to push for the league, other giants of the game have reiterated their stance against it.
Responding to Thursday’s court judgement, a spokesperson for Manchester United said the club “remains fully committed to participation in UEFA competitions”. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich stated that they view it as an attack on domestic leagues and European football structures. Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid noted that “The European football community does not support the European Super League.”
It is clear that whilst the legal barriers to a Super League have now been removed, the lack of support from key clubs means that the controversial plans are still unlikely to come to fruition in the near future. Most teams instead wish to focus on improving existing competitions and strengthening their domestic leagues.
The debate around a European Super League is sure to continue. However, without wider backing from football’s most influential figures, the radical proposals face significant obstacles going forward.
