January 14, (THEWILL) – Sonia, the 25-year-old daughter of former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has denied being involved in an alleged plot to traffic a Nigerian to the United Kingdom for alleged organ harvesting.
Presently resident in Willesden Green, London, Sonia is said to have been the intended recipient of a kidney transplant in an alleged conspiracy to traffic a 21-year-old Nigerian, David Ukpor Nwamini.
At the Old Bailey Court on Friday (January 13), Sonia pleaded not guilty to conspiring to arrange or facilitate the travel of David Nwamini, with a view to exploitation between August 1, 2021, and May 5 2022.
Senator Ekweremadu (60) alongside his wife, Beatrice (56), were arrested at Heathrow Airport last June 2022, after arriving on a flight from Turkey.
They were charged in connection with the case alongside a Nigerian doctor, Obinna Obeta (51), from Southwark.
Ekweremadu was not present for the pre-trial hearing at the Old Bailey. Obeta was also not present.
Sonia entered her not-guilty plea in the dock beside her mother.
The defendants are due to face a seven-week trial at the Old Bailey from January 31.
While Senator Ekweremadu is currently in custody, both Sonia and Mrs Ekweremadu (Beatrice), are on bail.
